Dog Crates - Puppy Training

Crate training is one of the most effective, if not the most effective, method of housebreaking a puppy or dog. Dog Crates are also referred to as a dog kennel or dog cage. A dog crate is simply a caged enclosure with a caged door. They are available in many sizes and are available in pet shops or where pet supplies are sold.

The reason crate training your puppy or dog is so effective is because a dog instinctively strives to avoid soiling the area where it eats and sleeps. The dog will come to see the crate as it's den and will try to avoid soiling its den.
The key to crate training your puppy or dog is to establish a consistent routine. Show your puppy or dog where the designated "toilet" area is located. It is very important to shower your dog with praise every time it eliminates in the established toilet area and not to express anger when the dog makes a mistake. The most critical part of this phase of your dog training is to make sure the dog is always in the crate when unsupervised. The idea here is that the dog will think of the dog crate as its home and not want to soil his home.
When returning home or waking in the morning, make sure to take your dog to the designated toilet area. If your dog eliminates in the designated area, praise him verbally along with treats and toys.
It is very important to never leave your dog in the crate for an extended period of time. If your dog has no choice but to soil his crate, that will only confuse him and you start to move backwards in your training. Remember when potty training puppies and dogs, consistency is the key.
The rule of thumb is to let your dog out of the crate every 45 minutes (not at night) when you are at home and to take him outside on a leash. If he doesn't eliminate in three to five minutes, return him to his crate immediately.
Lastly, keep a diary or record on your calendar the times of day your dog or puppy needs to eliminate each day. After some time has passed and your dog consistently eliminates in the designated area on a regular basis, you will be able to let him have free run of the house. At this point you will feel such a sense of accomplishment because you are able to enjoy and play with your new best friend.
